We are exhorted by the writer of Hebrews, chapter 6:
"Therefore let us go on and get past the elementary stage in the teachings and doctrine of Christ, the Messiah, advancing steadily toward the completeness and perfection that belongs to spiritual maturity. LET US NOT AGAIN BE LAYING THE FOUNDATION of repentance and abandoment of dead works [dead formalism], and of the faith [by which you turned] to God,
With teachings about purifying, the laying on of hands, the resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment and punishment. [These are all matters of which you should have been fully aware long, long, ago.]
If indeed God permits we will [now] proceed [to advanced teaching].
Please notice that it does not say we are to LAY ASIDE these principles but we are not to LAY THEM AGAIN. I think some in the Body of Christ have interpreted this to mean we are to lay these principles aside or dispense with them even.
How well do we think that a master builder would fare who tore out his foundation and proceeded to build without one. I think Jesus called that kind of builder "the foolish man" who built his house upon the sand when it was a Rock Hard Foundation that he needed first and foremost for his house to stand.
Let's say I am going to make a cake, but I misread the receipe and think it says to abandon, not add, the flour, eggs, sugar, butter, and leavening but instead I'm a little entranced with the sound of this one wonderful exotic flavoring called Madagascar vanilla for, after all, it comes from an orchid bean grown in the jungle of a remote faraway island.....seems almost magical this stuff...and it has this heavenly aroma. But can I really make a cake with only Madagascar vanilla? Well no, it is only effective if its added to the flour, eggs, sugar, butter, and leavening.
Ephesians 2:20
"You are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself the chief Cornerstone.
In Him the whole structure is joined (bound, welded) together harmoniously; and it continues to rise (grow, increase) into a holy temple in the Lord - a sanctuary dedicated, concecrated and sacred to the presence of the Lord.
In Him - and in fellowship with one another - you yourselves also are being built up [into this structure] with the rest, to form a fixed abode (dwelling place) of God in the Spirit."
1 Corinthians 3:11
"For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is [already] laid, which is Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Anonted One.
Yes, most definitely, we want to go on to more advanced teaching that helps brings the Body into maturity, even the more exotic flavors, but I don't believe it means to discard our foundation......we just are not to keep rehearsing the basics ad nauseum, but as the Grace of God permits we are brought into deeper, wider, and higher places in Him.
If you want to build a skyscraper, (one that touches the heavens) you have to go deeper before you ever can go higher.
