Jesus' Three Anointings

Before we get to Jesus's three anointings, I would like to look at the prophectic picture drawn for us in the Old Testament of the three anointings through David's life.

David, who is a type of Christ was anointed three times.  It took those three anointings to bring him into kingship over all Israel.

First at Bethel, then Hebron and then Zion.

David fulfilled the orders of prophet, priest and king in his anointings.  The anointing is a progressive experience.

His first anointing was when Samuel anointed him as a lad:

1.  David was anointed in the midst of his brethren, when only God could see his potential.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

2.  David was anointed King over Judah, after years of unjust suffering as a fugitive from King Saul.  "If we suffer with him we also will share his glory."

2 Samuel 2:4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.

David was anointed king over just the one tribe, Judah.  Jesus told us if we were faithful over the small things that we would be made ruler over many.

3. David was anointed King over all Israel, after years of consistently growing strong in war.

2 Samuel 3:1 Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.  Saul, the type of the flesh was growing weaker as David, the type of Christ was growing stronger.

2 Samuel 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.

This time it was over ALL ISRAEL, all the tribes.

Jesus was anointed three times:

1.  At his conception/birth.

Mary was overshadowed by the Most High at the conception of Jesus:
Luke 1:35  "Then the angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you (as a shining cloud) and so the holy Thing which shall be born of you will be called the Son of God."

2.  At his baptism

Luke 3:22 "And the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form, like a dove and a voice came from heaven, saying You are My Son, the Beloved!  In you I am well pleased and find delight!"

3.  At his ascension

John 17:  "When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour is come.  Glorify and exalt and honor Your Son, so that Your Son may glorify and extol and honor and magnify You....so that he may give eternal life to all whom You have given Him.

And now, Father, glorify Me along with Yourself and restore Me to such majesty and honor in Your presence as I had with You before the world existed."

Jesus did not walk as a glorified man while on earth....he walked as an anointed man of flesh, the son of man.  That's why he said he could do nothing of himself, but only the Father in Him could do the works.  But in his glorification, he was anointed or graduated to Fatherhood status.  Jesus went from "with you" status to "in you" status.  He returned as the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost and 'reincarnated'  in 120 of his followers, fathering them with the same kind of anointing that he attained in his glorificaton......throne room glory.   This glory is unfolded within us progressively as we walk in Him.  As more room is made in the "inn" he is birthed in us in greater and greater glory.

will Jesus need another three anointings at his second coming(parousia)

Dear Jamsta, Jesus has already come back as the Holy Spirit within us. His 1st coming was as a singular man, but his 2nd coming is as a corporate body of Christ.

Jesus said, "It is finished". He has completed his journey or anoinints and we are following in his footsteps.

one more thing Karen, will there be a parousia first or a rapture

Jamsta, I see them as the same thing. The church has taught that we are being 'raptured' off this planet, but I believe that is a faulty understanding of what it means to be caught up. Remember that Paul was caught up to the third heaven and he did not leave this earth. The Word tells us he is coming to be glorified IN HIS SAINTS. We become this 'so called' second coming when we are filled with the fullness of God, spirit, soul and body. INstead of there being just one man, Jesus filled with the fullness of God, he has a corporate body of Christ beings to bring the love of God into this planet.
